Bluebirds have started Spring 2009 nesting activities

The bluebird couple has started taking mealworms and nest-building activities (thanks to Stephanie for one of the shots). The female laid the first egg last year on April 18th so it’s getting to be that time again.

It’s not looking like a nest yet, but I’m going to call it. The female is bringing in the material so it appears we have a successful launch. I should have the full color cam running soon, but for now, the nightvision cam is running 24-7 (sometimes it crashes) so you can watch her spin her nest.

Here’s the lovely couple in the house together (Monday morning, 3/30):

Yes Kip! It sure looks like the beginnings of a nest to me! Lets keep our fingers crossed!

Beautiful pictures, Kip! The Yellow-throated Warbler last week was a real treat. Hummingbirds have started showing up in the panhandle of FL so look for them soon also.

The female hung out inside the house today for a long time for the first time. Another first today is she did her spin & wing-flapping (that forms the nest). IT’S ON!

Thanks for the tip Carolyn! I’m making a hummer nest cam and I just read last night that the females start nest-building as soon as they arrive as they are already carrying eggs. Better get it installed now…
